Our History

The Mico Practising Primary and Junior High School with Special Unit (1988) formerly Mico Practising All Age, with mailing address at 1a Marescaux Road, Kingston 5. It is on the same campus as the Mico Teachers’ College and separated only by a fence from the Wolmers Boys’ and Girls’ schools.

The school is within walking distance from the semi-commercial area of Cross Roads, the Ministry of Education Youth and Culture and the Ministry of Finance and Planning. It sits opposite the Cavaliers Water Plant. The school is also within close proximity to St. Francis Primary, John Mills Primary and Junior High, Central Branch Primary and Junior High and the Alman Town Primary Schools. The school has two entrances, one on Manhattan Road and the other on Marescaux Road.

The present Mico Practising Primary and Junior High School it is believed, was founded in 1931. The founder, Mr. A. J. Newman wanted to establish a model school where the teachers in training at the Mico College could have a place to actually practice and also to assist with teaching/learning experiments. There is the belief that the school was relocated to its present site from at least two other locations and is therefore said to be older, but so far there is no substantial evidence to prove that point. The Mico Practising Primary and Junior High School with Special Unit was started by the Mico College from money bequeathed by Lady Mico. It is therefore closely March affiliated with the Mico College and therefore the Trustees in England as well as the Mico Foundation.

The Parent Teachers Association, it is believed, began under Mr. Newman’s leadership at the Mico Practising School. The school, which has over 1200 children on roll with over 40 teachers, boasts achievement both in academics, sports as well as in cultural events.
